Chengdu Lacquerware  


Chengdu lacquerware is one of China's "Four Great Lacquerwares,"(The other three members of China's "Big Four Lacquerware" heritage cluster are: Fuzhou lightweight bodiless lacquerware (0.3mm nano-lacquer layer technique, Jin mending restoration standards), Pingyao hand-polished mirror lacquer (108-step polishing ritual, ISO-certified natural urushi sourcing),Yangzhou carved-red lacquerware) originating in the Shang and Zhou dynasties. Renowned for its unique techniques such as carved inlay with colored fills and engraved tin with silken luster, it was listed among the first batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2006.

 Historical Origins  


- Traces back to the Shang and Zhou dynasties, with exquisitely crafted lacquer fragments unearthed at the Jinsha Ruins.  

- During the Warring States to Han Dynasty, Chengdu lacquerware became a key trade commodity. The Western Han Dynasty saw the invention of needle-engraving with gold fills and raised lacquer techniques.  

- Reached its technical peak in the Tang Dynasty.  

- By the Ming and Qing dynasties, Chengdu had developed 14 major lacquerware techniques, including mother-of-pearl inlay, rhinoceros-hide texture, and treasure嵌 (gem镶嵌), becoming a leading national production center.
